Library cash in doubt

Concerns are being raised that a million-pound lottery grant to refurbish a library could be lost if the council fails to find a contractor within two months.

Northolt Library,in Church Road, was granted £1.3million under the community libraries programme in November last year.

But, if a contractor is not approved and building work does not start by October, the money could be withdrawn.

Leader of the council Jason Stacey expressed his concern about finding a suitable contractor by the deadline.

He said: "It's an exciting project but I must register my con-cern as to whether some of the timetable is as realistic as we think it is."

Council officers assured cabinet members they were confi-dent work would be completed as planned.

Diane Vince,39, said the library urgently needed to be refurbished to appeal to people in the community.

The mother-of-four,who lives on Radcliffe Estate, said: "At the moment you can see paint peeling off the walls and the library needs improving to appeal to children, parents and older people.

"My children and I would go to the library if there were better services and offered training classes or children's groups.

"I hope the council is not dragging its feet, as the library needs a boost to bring it into a new age."

The council is expected to select a contractor by September and work is set to start by the end of October.
