Mound danger warning after cycle crash at Northala Fields
A concerned relative is appealing for measures to stop children cycling on Northala Field's mounds after his cousins were badly hurt.
George Haddad arrived on the scene shortly after the 16-year-old and his 14-year-old brother, who asked not to be named, crashed.
The older boy suffered four broken bones in his back and arm while the younger teenager broke one bone in his left arm, both were badly cut and bruised.
Mr Haddad, of Rushdene Crescent, Northolt, says a simple fence would deter youngsters from risking life and limb as they hurtle down the 20m high hills.
The 42-year-old said: "The older boy lost control at the bottom of the mound because the slope all of a sudden hits a gravel path.
"His bike skidded and he was dragged across the stoney surface for about 10 metres. His brother saw what happened to him and braked on the mound which tipped him over his bicycle."
Both were taken to hospital, with the older boy having to be airlifted, on Sunday September 28 at about 1pm.
Both are now back at home recovering.
The boys were not alone in using the mounds as cycling ramps.
Mr Haddad added: "There were about five other kids doing the same thing at the time and every time I pass the park while driving on the A40 there are people cycling on the mounds. It's another accident waiting to happen.
"Some kind of barrier around the bottom the mounds which people can walk through seems the most obvious solution.
"There is no point in putting up signs because even adults don't pay attention to them."
A Council spokeswoman said: "Cyclists should only use the main route through the park.
"Although it is very difficult to safeguard against reckless behaviour we are carrying out a risk assessment to determine if any further safety measures are necessary."
