Frustrated residents want a light to shine on dangerous alleys

FRUSTRATED residents are appealing for vital access routes from an estate to be made safe and warn someone else may be killed.

Neighbours have been campaigning for years for better lighting and for foliage to be cut back in the alleys leading from the Wood End Estate to the surrounding shops, public transport and main roads.

Dave Dwyer, chairman of the Wood End Residents Association says scores of residents are intimidated by them and feel their area has been forgotten by the council.
He said: "The estate was built in 1975 and nothing has really been done to the alleys since then. People have to walk out of the estate into darkness because the lighting is so poor and between Wood End Way and Wood End Gardens there aren't any lights at all.
"It's a disgrace, lighting in this day and age should not be an issue, people need to be able to feel secure."
The other route runs from Sudbury Hill Station to Bedser Drive and is where 17-year-old schoolgirl Jeshma Raithatha was killed in May 2005. Viktor Dembovskis, of Latvia, was jailed for life for her murder.
Her sister Nishma, 15, took her life on April 7 this year by jumping from the top floor of a car park in Harrow, eventually unable to bear losing her sister.
Their family, who used to live on the estate, released a statement last Friday (24), it said: "Despite every effort and unconditional love and support from her family, friends and teachers, she lost the battle to cope with the pain of loss.
"The tragic events have left the family devastated and inconsolable. The small consolation the family can take is the belief that Nishma is at peace and with her sister Jeshma."
Responding to residents' calls for improved security in the area a council spokeswoman said: "A site visit has been arranged in conjunction with the Safer
Neighbourhood Team and we will take action on any issues.
"The alleyway connecting Sudbury Hill Station and Bedser Drive is managed by the David Lloyd centre and the council been in contact with the centre's management.
"The David Lloyd centre has undertaken a detailed review of the alleyway and is working closely with the council's community safety team and the police towards a long-term solution."
