Uncollected rubbish left to rot in Greenford Road

Disgusted residents were forced to leave rotting rubbish out in their gardens after the council failed to collect it for two weeks in a row.

Baffled neighbours in Greenford Road were surprised to find that, although their bin bags, unwanted plastic and garden waste was picked up, their food scraps and other recyclables such as cans and paper, were not.

The council cited roadworks for the Good for Greenford regeneration scheme in the stretch from Tesco down to the junction with Locarno Road as the problem. But Resident Marlesha Robinson-Brown says this does not explain why some waste was collected and the rest was not.

The 25-year-old said: "It was supposed to have been collected on Friday 4, a day late because of the bank holiday.

"They didn't come on the Monday so I called the council and they said it would be collected on Thursday as usual. But Friday came and it was still there. I called again and again and they kept saying they would come the following day but they never did.

"The food waste turned to maggots, it was a disgusting sight, people didn't know what to do with it. A lot of people were upset.

"I'm appalled at how the council have handled the situation. If they thought there was a problem they should have contacted us first and they shouldn't have kept promising it will be done the next day. I feel let down."

The problem was only rectified on Monday after Ms Robinsion-Brown contacted her ward councillors.

A council spokeswoman said: "Recycling is a top priority for us and we were concerned to hear there were some missed collections in Greenford Road.

"This is completely unacceptable and we've already asked our contractors to investigate what caused this problem.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

We'd like to hear from you.
